Busch Stadium will play host to the All-Star game this summer.

On July 14, Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, will host the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The young stadium, which opened in 2006, is no stranger to history-making games. As the site of the third, fourth and fifth games of the 2006 World Series, Busch Stadium is familiar with the drama and pageantry of on-field celebrations and in-game suspense.
Now, in only its fourth year, the ballpark will accommodate Major League Baseball's greatest athletes and more than 40,000 fans as the American League and National League face off in an attempt to gain home-field advantage in the World Series.
St. Louis has not hosted the Midsummer Classic since 1966, when the game was played in the former Busch Stadium. Nearly half a century later, Cardinal fans, which are considered to be some of the greatest fans in baseball, are hungry for an all-star game and, as Mattoon's closest Major League ballpark, Busch Stadium is only a short drive away for many Lake Land College students.
Dental hygiene student and Cardinals fan Jen Kopp is excited that the all-star game will be played in her favorite team's stadium, saying, "It will be great exposure for the city of St. Louis."
Although some students, including fans of the Chicago Cubs, do not share the same enthusiasm for Busch Stadium, many Cubs fans are thrilled to have an all-star game within driving distance.
"I'm not a big St. Louis fan, but I think it's nice that (the all-star game) is somewhere close," said longtime Cubs fan Amie Hargis, who is majoring in earth science.
Pre-engineering student and fellow Cubs fan Kord Nolte added, "I think it would be an awesome opportunity to watch MLB all-star (players) and to experience (the game) live."
The 2009 MLB All-Star Game offers LLC students the most realistic all-star viewing opportunity to date, but acquiring tickets is nearly impossible.
Geographic Information Systems Specialist and Cubs fan Brooke Ferguson said what many MLB fans are thinking, "I would go if the opportunity arose."
